Why Do You Need An Internal Transaction Number (ITN)?

The internal transaction number is the automated export system-generated number that is assigned to a shipment. It confirms that an electronic export information transaction was accepted and is on file in the automated export system (AES). The foreign trade regulations of the US require that goods worth more than $2500 must be filed by the AES. When you complete the process of receiving the ITN number for your shipment, you will receive an email containing your ITN number. The ITN number is, therefore, an important part of the shipment and the customs clearance process as a whole.

Here’s why the ITN number plays such a vital role.

  • Filing evidence

According to the foreign trade regulations of the United States, your ITN number is proof that your electronic export information has been filed and submitted by you or an agency on your behalf. If the information provided is invalid or seems manipulated and is in violation of the laws implemented by the OOE (office of export enforcement), you will be charged up to $9000. It is thus imperative that you provide appropriate and accurate information.

  • ITN for documents

There are certain documents that require an ITN, without which the commodity shall not be cleared. This simply means that if such documents that require an ITN are found without one, those goods can get held at the border and you will experience delays. Acquiring the ITN is therefore quite important. Once acquired, the ITN will appear on the AESDirect filing summary screen and apart from this, the AESDirect will email the ITN to the email address that is associated with the account that submitted the EEI.

  • Verifying the accuracy in routed transaction

The ITN, in a routed export transaction, allows you to make sure that the information filed on your behalf is accurate. Although it is always advisable that you handle filing and information input for accuracy personally, especially when you are filing via the AES, if you do let someone else file through AES on your behalf, you must ensure that the freight forwarders are completing the transaction and the documentation properly.

Thus, the internal transaction number (ITN) is, as said earlier; your proof of filing and it should be effectively included in your bills of lading and the shipper’s letter of instruction. Clearit itn number can be acquired easily as it involves a simple and hassle-free process that one can easily understand and act upon.
